Colombia´s economy showed great results after intensive use of trademarks

The Inter-American Intellectual Property Association (ASIPI, for its acronym in Spanish) and the International Trademark Association (INTA), aware of the benefits that Intellectual Property offers and the importance of trademarks in the economy, undertook, with the collaboration of the SIC and other Industrial Property Offices of Latin America, a study to analyze the economic impact of trademark industries in terms of employment, economic activity and foreign trade. The study was launched in Bogota, on December 14, 2016.

The study showed that brand-intensive companies pay higher salaries by an additional 14% in Colombia, and 51% of the products imported into our country belong to said companies. At the same time, from 45 sectors studied, 19 were classified as intensive.

For the Colombian case, the incidence of intensive sectors in trademarks on imports is higher than on exports. These results are explained by the difference in composition in foreign trade. Latin American countries are intensive in exports of primary goods that use fewer trademarks for their commercialization, and import final consumer goods that are characterized by the use of trademarks.
