Huawei is ready to release new operating system for the third quarter of 2019

The Chinese newspaper Global Times revealed that the Chinese technology company Huawei is moving forward in the deployment of its own operating system and in its trademark registration in the European Union to face the prohibitions of the United States government.

According to the report, as a result of the commercial inconveniences with companies of Americans like Google (owner of Android) the Chinese company is accelerating the development of its own bet. The operating system plan, known by the name of HongMeng, has been in development for more than seven years.

For the Global Times, the last sign that the company is accelerating the launch of its own operating system, was the presentation of some Huawei requests to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) to obtain registered trademarks for the system. operative and other software.

A few weeks ago, the Chinese company presented at least three different trademarks: Huawei Ark, the Huawei Ark compiler and the Huawei Ark OS.

According to the Asian media, trademarks describe the uses of compiler software and the operating system for electronic devices. The applications are still under review by the patent authority of the European Union.

In mid-May, Huawei received approval for the registration of Hongmeng by the trademark office of the National Intellectual Property Administration of China.

A manager of the brand told the Global Times that the company will bet on launching its own operating system "as early as this autumn." That means that by August or September could be born the first operating system of the Chinese manufacturer, a third player in a market dominated by Android and iOS, after the failure of the Windows Phone attempt.

Filtered information, according to the media, that Huawei's new devices would run out of Android updates, because of Google's decisions.

The United States Department of Commerce granted a grace period of three months for companies to continue with normality, this deadline will expire on August 19 and there remains uncertainty about what measures will be taken by the governments of China and the United States in the midst of the commercial tension.

However, despite brand registration, launching an operating system is not simple. Among other challenges, Huawei will need to conquer a broad community of developers to ensure that in addition to the Android and iOS versions, the vast majority of existing and future applications are also available for Ark OS or another system.

The Chinese newspaper also noted in another publication that internally the consumption of mobile telephony has permeated tensions in the midst of the trade dispute between the United States and China.

According to the Global Times, some sources and consumers told the Chinese newspaper that they are looking forward to the arrival of Huawei's new operating system.

The media also said that Chinese consumers perceived "poor design and weak innovation" during Apple's latest developer conference.

First stone

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that it has granted licenses for the commercial use of 5G networks to the companies China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Broadcasting Network.

The ministry said in a statement that the measure opens a "new era" in China's telecommunications industry and that, although it has only granted licenses to these four local companies, it "continues to welcome" foreign companies. so that they "participate actively" in this market.

"The 5G technology will establish a new, fast, mobile and secure information infrastructure," said Industry Minister Miao Wei.

He added that "the 5G will offer new opportunities, favor the growth of the Chinese digital economy, accelerate the transformation of many industries and be used more intensively in sectors such as the industrial and automotive."

According to a report by the Information Technology and Communications Academy of China mentioned by the ministry, this technology will generate around 1.54 trillion dollars in economic value and more than 3 million jobs between 2020 and 2025.

It is expected that the 5G networks allow information and data to be exchanged at a speed much higher than that of the current 4G, which may be used, for example, for the development of the "internet of things".

The Achilles heel for Chinese companies (but also for the USA) is that this paradigm shift needs in large part from American semiconductor and component companies, such as Qualcomm, Nvidia, Intel, Xilinx, Skyworks Solutions and Macom Technologies

How does the decision of Facebook affect?

Huawei will not be able to pre-install Facebook, as well as Instagram or WhatsApp on their devices, according to the news agency Reuters.

The firm would join the global group of companies that have changed or suspended their relationship with Huawei, a list includes Google and Vodafone (Great Britain).

What challenges does this mean? That users must download the application in order to use it; but being Google who provides Huawei's operating system and its digital store, Play Store, uncertainty returns because from August 19 the relationship between these two companies will cease, which would imply that the store is not in the new equipment that is develop

The output is that in the operating system that Huawei is developing Facebook is compatible with the software.

The newspaper El Colombiano de Medellín noted that to explain this issue, Huawei pointed out that Facebook is an application developed by a third party and reported that as with other public access applications, Facebook will continue to operate normally on Huawei devices.

For Colombia this situation is important because more than 31 million people have Facebook, according to information from the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce, that is, 68% of the national population. In addition, Huawei is the second brand in cellular sales in the country, after Samsung, with a market share of 17.3% in 2018, according to figures from Euromonitor.

This means that if you have Huawei or want to buy one and use Facebook or one of its applications, there is no reason to be alarmed, at least for now, as the picture becomes clear.
